Director: Daniel Gordon
Starring: Daniel Gordon, Jong-il Kim Plot: British documentary filmed in North Korea. It looks at the phenomenon of the Mass Games – a display of music, dance, gymnastics and design – the perfect example of the state’s ideology, the subordination of the individual’s desires to the needs of the collective”. But it’s the individuals whom we get to know as the documentary follows two gifted young female gymnasts and their families in the months leading up to a performance. The film is a careful observation of the ordinariness of daily life in an extraordinary context. And it’s a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of a culture of isolation and control, and to see it reflected in the lives of two teenage girls and their parents. |
